Why Take a Class at

Physio Collective?

ACL Rehab Class

This class will be designed as a general strength and conditioning class for pre-op, post-op, and non-operative ACL rehab clients.  Since there are different stages in ACL rehab it will be up to the physios to decide when the client is capable of performing basic strength exercises.  The plan is to incorporate foundational strength exercises such as squats, lunges/split squats, deadlifts, hamstring curls, etc. to help the client regain knee function.

The class is not limited to only ACL clients.  Any client that wants to do a lower body strength class can take it.  However, the exercises will be geared towards strengthening the knees and will focus on correcting muscle imbalances and compensatory patterns that tend to come after an ACL injury (i.e. hip strategies vs knee strategies, gait, etc).

If the client needs to progress to more sport-specific training (i.e plyometrics, running, jumping, cutting, etc), then they can either book a one-on-one PDR session with a kin or potentially in the future we can offer another class aimed at sport-specific training.

Start Date: April 15th, 2023

Days:  Saturdays @ 2:15-3:15pm (every week)

Location: Brentwood PC

Billing:  PDR or private kin (No ICBC clients)

Candidates for class:  ACL rehab clients or any knee rehab clients that can perform squats, deadlifts, etc. (i.e. PFPS and OA clients may not be able to squat due to knee pain so this would not be a great class for them to take).

It may be a good idea to have the client do a complimentary consultation with the kin so that we can find out what their rehab goals are.

How many people in the class: 1-5 clients

How to book: online or at the front desk

Cancellations:  24-hour cancellation policy

Check in: at front desk

Class set up:  There will be stations set up with different exercises (i.e. 1 station for some kind of squat, 1 station for some kind of hip hinge, 1 station for some kind of hamstring exercise, 1 station for some kind of lunge/split squat, etc).  There will be an education component to the class (i.e. when the graft is susceptible to retear, common compensatory patterns, things to avoid, mindset, etc).

Why offer this class: There are a lot of psychological components that change after suffering an ACL injury. This class can offer a support group for people with similar injuries that are struggling mentally as well as physically.

Strength training is hugely important in ACL recovery due to the nature of the injury and surgery.  There is lots of muscle atrophy following ACL surgery.  Strength training is important for returning the client to normal function (i.e. return to sport, walking, etc), and protecting the graft.

Overseeing Practitioners: Garrett Hughes (on-site physio) & Melissa Dahn (kin)
