How Custom Orthotics from Your Chiropractor Can Transform the Way You Move
We are happy to announce that we are now offering custom orthotics to our clients at Station Square with our chiropractor, Dr. Tim. Every part of your body is connected and that starts with your feet. Imbalances or abnormal mechanics in the feet can lead to pain and dysfunction throughout the body, including the feet, knees, hips and back. Custom orthotics can help alleviate pain and reduce dysfunction to get you back to doing what you love.
What Are Custom Orthotics?
Custom orthotics are specially designed shoe inserts that replace your insoles. They are used to support and correct biomechanics in the feet. They are custom-made, so they are fitted to your feet to meet your specific needs. Custom orthotics are different from generic insoles available at the store and the insoles that come with your shoes, which are designed for the general population.
What Conditions Can Custom Orthotics Help With?
Although most people associate custom orthotics with the feet, they can actually help with conditions throughout the whole body. In general, custom orthotics can improve posture and alignment of your joints and spine, decrease pain, improve biomechanics, and prevent injuries.
Some common conditions they can help with include:
Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
Achilles tendinopathy
Flat feet or high arches
Morton’s neuroma
Shin splints
Knee pain
Patellofemoral pain syndrome
Hip pain
IT band syndrome
Lower back and SI joint pain
Leg length inequality
Arthritis
Diabetes related foot issues
What Does the Process of Getting Custom Orthotics Look Like?
In your initial fitting appointment, the chiropractor will first discuss your complaints and goals. Then the chiropractor will assess your feet and body. This will include a postural assessment, a gait analysis, palpation of joints and soft tissues, a visual assessment, and more. Finally, an impression of your feet will be made. This impression, along with a prescription form detailing any modifications or accommodations we might need to make, will be sent to the lab. The lab will create your orthotics and send them back to us within about 1 week. You will be notified when your orthotics are ready for pickup. You have the option to book a pickup appointment, in which we can ensure the fit before you take your orthotics home. There is usually an adjustment period before your feet are used to your new orthotics. If any modifications are required, we are able to send them back to the lab within 90 days for no charge.
Does My Insurance Cover Custom Orthotics?
Most extended health benefits do cover custom orthotics. Be sure to double-check your specific coverage before booking an appointment. Details you may want to check include the dollar amount covered, whether you are covered for orthotics from a chiropractor, whether you need a note from your family doctor prior to getting the orthotics, and what documents you need to submit for your claim (this usually includes your receipt, a copy of the prescription form, and a report from the manufacturing lab). We are unable to direct bill for custom orthotics for any insurance company.
Custom orthotics go beyond just foot support. They can contribute to your overall musculoskeletal health and alignment. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain or looking to prevent future issues, properly fitted orthotics can be a game-changer for your mobility and well-being.
