Dr. Tim Chow is addressing and debunking common myths about chiropractic care. He aims to clarify misconceptions and provide you with the factual information needed to understand the true benefits and scope of chiropractic treatments. Let’s explore the realities behind these myths and get a clearer picture of what chiropractic care can offer.

[MYTH] Chiropractic Care is Only for Back Pain:

While chiropractors are best known for treating back pain, we are also trained to address a wide range of conditions, including neck pain, headaches, nerve pain and pain in all extremities.

[MYTH] Chiropractic Adjustments are Dangerous:

Chiropractic care is considered safe when performed by a licensed and trained chiropractor. Serious complications are extremely rare. The most common complication is soreness or slightly increased symptoms for 1-2 days.

[MYTH] Once You Start Seeing a Chiropractor, You Have to Keep Going Forever:

While some people choose to have ongoing care for maintenance and prevention, many patients only visit for specific issues and stop once those issues are resolved.

[MYTH] Chiropractic Care is Not Based on Science:

There is a growing body of scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of chiropractic care for various conditions, especially musculoskeletal issues.

[MYTH] Chiropractic Adjustments are Painful:

Most adjustments are not painful, and many patients experience immediate relief. However, you may feel slight discomfort or soreness afterward, similar to what you might feel after exercising.

[MYTH] Chiropractic Care Can Cure All Diseases:

Chiropractors focus on musculoskeletal health and do not claim to cure diseases. They can help manage symptoms and improve overall health but are not a substitute for medical treatment of serious conditions.

[MYTH] Chiropractic Adjustments Can Cause Strokes:

The risk of stroke from cervical chiropractic adjustments is extremely low, and studies have shown it is not significantly higher than the risk from regular activities like turning your head quickly. Chiropractic visits and stroke are often associated because patients will seek chiropractic care when they are already experiencing a stroke, i.e., they have headache, dizziness, nausea, etc. A well trained chiropractor will recognize the signs and symptoms of a stroke and will direct you to the hospital immediately.

[MYTH] You Need a Referral to See a Chiropractor:

Here in Canada, you can see a chiropractor without a referral from a medical doctor.

[MYTH] Chiropractic Adjustments Can Cause Arthritis:

There is no evidence to suggest that chiropractic adjustments cause arthritis. In fact, chiropractic care can help manage and reduce symptoms of arthritis.

[MYTH] Chiropractic Care is Not Covered by Insurance:

Many insurance plans cover chiropractic care, but it’s always best to check with your provider for specific coverage details. If you are claiming through ICBC or WorkSafeBC please contact your adjuster before booking an appointment.
